Founded in 1862, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) was Hong Kong's first public utility. Today, we are one of the largest energy suppliers in Hong Kong, operating with world-class corporate management and leading-edge business practices. For the past years, Towngas has been growing with Hong Kong, evolving from the simple gas company supplying fuel for street lamps to our current leading position in the energy industry in the greater China region.

A major reason for our success has been the reputation we have established over the years, enabling us to win the trust of the people of Hong Kong. Our core business in the territory consists of the production and distribution of gas, marketing and sale of gas, the sale of gas appliances, as well as comprehensive after-sales services. With a pipeline network consisting of more than 3,500km of gas pipes, we supply town gas to over 1.8 million customers in Hong Kong. Expanding our business horizons in recent years, we have diversified our business into telecommunications, building services, engineering and the new eco-energies, among many others.

Towngas moved into the gas business in mainland China in 1994. Currently, we have more than 200 projects, including piped city-gas projects, upstream and midstream developments, water and wastewater treatment schemes, natural gas filling stations, as well as new energy exploration and utilization ventures, across various provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions throughout the country.

Mainland Utilities Business

Commencing with just two joint ventures in Guangdong province and less than 5,000 customers in 1994, we have seen rapid growth in our gas businesses on the mainland over the past decade. In 2002, Hong Kong & China Gas Investment Limited was set up in Shenzhen to manage the Group's investments in mainland China. In 2007, Towngas acquired Panva Gas Holdings Limited, a Hong Kong listed company, becoming its main shareholder. The company subsequently changed its name to Towngas China Company Limited with a focus on piped city-gas projects.

With 130 city-gas projects, we are the leading piped city-gas operator in the country, serving more than 20 million residential, commercial and industrial customers.  Providing one-stop shop services, we also introduced our own "Bauhinia" brand in 2005 offering a wide range of safe and quality appliances, which have achieved highly satisfactory sales records to date.

New Energy Business

ECO Environmental Investments Limited (ECO) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas). Committed to protecting the environment, ECO has not only developed a wide range of environmentally-friendly energy businesses but also has dedicated itself to driving innovation in related technologies.  ECO is focusing on the development of new energy projects in China that are low in emissions and pollution, covering resource exploitation, liquefaction of coalbed methane, coal-based chemicals, biomass energies, vehicular fuels, logistic hub and related facilities.

Manufacturing Business

Leveraging our widespread and diverse user experience both in the gas industry and our adoption of the world’s leading Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology, Towngas established M-TECH as the brand for our smart gas meters and metering system.

M-TECH owns a number of intellectual property rights and international patents on the advanced MEMS mass flow sensing technology and in addition to operating an R&D Centre in Silicon Valley in the United States, it is also actively involved in the research and application of MEMS technology in flow measurement and control.

In 2000, GH-Fusion Corporation Limited was formed to manufacture polyethylene (PE) pipe fitting and jointing products for both gas and water piping systems. In September 2012, broadening the product scope and offering a total solution package to customers, G-Tech Piping System Company Limited, the Group’s wholly owned subsidiary, was established to manufacture quality PE piping.
