Iran’s Strategic Significance and Outlook under “the Belt and Road Initiative”

     To enhance public understanding of the history and latest development of Iran and its strategic position under “the Belt and Road Initiative”, the Maritime Silk Road Society and Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Hong Kong co-organized a public seminar on “Iran and the Belt and Road - History and Prospects” today (16 May). The speaker was Dr Mehdi Fakheri, Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Hong Kong.
 

     “Iran, which was called Persia with thousand years of glorious history, was one of the four ancient civilisations. Persia was strategically located on the ancient Silk Road. Nowadays, Iran, as one of the major economies in Asia and the Middle East, has considerable potential for economic development,” said Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of Maritime Silk Road Society, in her welcome remarks. 

     “For the seminar today, I am sure that Dr Fakheri’s presentation does not only enable us to understand the magnificent history, culture and latest development of Iran, but also to learn about Iran’s strategic significance and outlook under the Belt and Road Initiative,” she added.

     The seminar was held at HKUST Business School Central and was attended by around 100 guests, including representatives from the international and local business communities.

     In his presentation titled “Iran and the Belt and Road” Dr Fakheri covered three topics, namely general information of Iran, Iranian culture, tourism – cities in Iran.

Brief Biography of Dr Mehdi Fakheri     

     Dr Fakheri graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from National University of Iran in 1979. He received his MA in International Relations from Tehran University in 1982 and Ph.D. in Political Science from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1988).

     Dr Fakheri has been Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Hong Kong and Macao since 2015. He has previously served in several diplomatic missions, including: First Counselor, Permanent Mission of Iran, Geneva (2002-2005); Charge d’Affaire, Embassy of Iran, Mexico (1993-1997); Economic Attache, Embassy of Iran, Madrid (1983-1988); Expert, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tehran (1980-1983).  Dr Fakheri has positions in other institutions as well. From 2005 to now, he is Associate Professor of School of International Relations in Tehran. He was also Vice-President for International affairs, Iran Chamber of Commerce and Industries (2008-2011); Head, Department of Politics, National Center for Globalization Studies (2005-2006); Deputy-Director, Department of Regional Economic Cooperation (2000-2002), etc.
