Dr Su Ge Sheds Light on the Belt and Road Initiative from An International Perspective

    At the invitation of the Maritime Silk Road Society, Dr Su Ge, Advisor of the Society and President of China Institute of International Studies, today (23 January) gave a presentation entitled “The Belt and Road Initiative from An International Perspective”.

 

    More than 200 guests, including officials from the Central Government and the HKSAR Government, Consulates-General, and representatives of local and foreign chambers of commerce, various business sectors and the academia, attended the event held at the Conrad Hotel.

 

    In her welcoming remarks, Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of the Maritime Silk Road Society, said, “It is our great honour to have Dr Su as our speaker in a presentation aimed at enhancing public understanding of the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’. We are particularly delighted that the event has brought together representatives from the international and local business communities, government and academia.”

 

    At the opening ceremony, Ms Tong Xiaoling, Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR, gave her introductory remarks which highlighted the significance of the “Belt and Road Initiative” for the implementation of the development of the “One Country, Two Systems”.

 

    During the ceremony, Mrs Ip also presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Ms Tong and a souvenir to Dr Su to thank them for their support for the Maritime Silk Road Society.

 

    Dr Su’s presentation covered the following:

  1. International Background of “The Belt and Road Initiative”
  2. Significance of “The Belt and Road Initiative” 
  3. “The Belt and Road Initiative” – Key Directions and Areas for Collaboration
  4. Challenges in Implementing “The Belt and Road Initiative”
  5. Role of Hong Kong in “The Belt and Road Initiative”
  6. Conclusion

       

     Brief Biography of Dr Su Ge

     Dr Su obtained his B.A. at Xian Foreign Language Institute, M.A. and Ph.D. at Brigham Young University, and Post-doctorate at Harvard University. He had also obtained the following qualifications: Smithsonian Institution Fellow; Senior Fulbright Fellow at John Hopkins, Georgetown and George Washington Universities; Post-doctorate at Beijing Foreign Studies University; Professor at Foreign Affairs College and Tsinghua University. Dr Su served as Minister Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in the United States (2003-2006), Ambassador to the Republic of Suriname (2006-2009), and Ambassador to the Republic of Iceland (2009-2013). He was appointed by China’s Foreign Ministry as the President of China Institute of International Studies in 2015. His publications included American China Policy and the Taiwan Issue; New International Order and China’s Response.
