Jardines Provided Online Training to “Operation Zhang Qian 2021” Interns

Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) organized an online training session entitled “Making the most of internship” for the interns of “Operation Zhang Qian 2021” on 15 July. The training session was delivered by Ms Anna Champion, Head of Early Careers of Jardine Matheson Limited who shared and guided interns on how to learn and plan during the internship and apply them in the future workplace. Prior to the training, Ms Regina Ip, Co-Chair of MSRS presented her vote of thanks to the participating companies of this year’s internship scheme, and in particular to Jardines for providing the interns with an additional learning opportunity.

Ms Champion first shared with students the difference between interns and employees, hoping that the interns could get to know more about themselves, the industry and the organization they are working for, and whether the internship job is suitable for them. Then she mentioned how students can prepare for the training and gave students a complete picture of an internship.

Then, Ms Champion began to teach interns some workplace skills. The first is growth mindset. She pointed out the difference between growth and fixed mindset is that the former mindset believes that intelligence and abilities can be developed and focus on learning, therefore with growth mindset one can embrace challenges. The second is to establish a personal brand, which contains five elements including: authentic, visible, consistent, reliable and resilient. She also interacted with students and invited everyone to develop their own personal brand. The third technique is impactful communication. How to communicate effectively with colleagues has several key points, including: planning, knowing your audience and purpose, and being clear and concise.

Ms Champion gave some final thoughts to students, saying that everyone should reflect and develop from the internship. At the end, Ms Champion then shared her own experience of first entering the workplace with the students.
