2022-09-23

Organized by Paper Communication Exhibition Services and co-organized by the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS), the “Belt & Road Art and Culture Forum” was held on 23 September in AsiaWorld-Expo. Mrs Regina Ip, Convenor of the Executive Council, LegCo Member, Co-chair of MSRS, presented the opening remarks at the Forum.

Mrs Ip firstly introduced the background and development of the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI), as well as its five principles: “Policy Coordination”, “Facilities Connectivity”, “Trade Facilitation”, “Financial Integration”, and “People-to-people Bond”. She mentioned the Central Authorities’ support for Hong Kong’s development as “a centre for cultural and arts exchange” and Hong Kong’s significance in promoting the BRI. She listed some of Hong Kong’s art and cultural hubs including the M+ and Hong Kong Palace Museum in West Kowloon Cultural District, Tai Kwun and PMQ, and is hopeful that Hong Kong will become a vibrant international centre for arts and cultural exchange. She added that as the world’s second largest contemporary art auction market, Hong Kong managed to boost its global market share despite the challenges caused by Covid-19 pandemic. She also highlighted that the recent popularity of Non-fungible Tokens (NFTs) drives the growth in the crypto-art sales indicating Hong Kong’s importance in online art sales in future. Mrs Ip briefly introduced the objectives of MSRS and its BRI-related art and cultural activities and summer internship programme. She is confident that Hong Kong can bounce back to play its strongest role in “revitalising people-to-people bonds with BRI countries and foster broader and deeper arts exchange and cultural interaction”. Finally, she wished the "Belt & Road National Art & Culture Expo Incorporating The 4th Hong Kong International Art & Collectibles Expo" a resounding success.

Mr Joseph Chan, Chairman of Silk Road Economic Development Research Center cum Honorary Advisor of MSRS, was also a speaker of the Forum. He introduced the history and development of the BRI, and anticipated more opportunities to arise in BRI countries in the post-pandemic era.
