Seminar on “Enchanting Colombia”

The “Enchanting Colombia” seminar organized by the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) was held on 4 May. Mr Luis Fernando Orozco Barrera, Consul General of Colombia in Hong Kong, was the guest speaker. Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of MSRS, gave a welcoming speech; Mr Joseph Chan, Chairman of Silk Road Economic Development Research Center and Honorary Advisor of MSRS, presented the certificate of appreciation to Mr Orozco Barrera and delivered his vote of thanks.

Mrs Ip mentioned the close diplomatic relation and trading partnership between China and Colombia. She hoped to see the participation of Colombia in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative. She then introduced the country’s art and culture and highlighted a novel Love in the Time of Cholera written by Colombian Nobel Prize winning author Gabriel García Márquez. She also expressed wishes to visit Colombia in future.

Mr Orozco Barrera presented statistics on the exportation and trading between Colombia and Hong Kong, and the attractiveness of investing in Colombia. He spoke of the five reasons for businesses to invest in Colombia: (1) dynamic domestic market, (2) regional hub and a competitive export platform, (3) key conditions and a safe and friendly business environment, (4) leadership and commitment to sustainable economic development, and (5) attractive investment opportunities. In recent years, Colombia attaches greater importance in green businesses and green investments. Since Hong Kong passport holders can travel to Colombia visa-free, Mr Orozco Barrera encouraged participants to experience the fruitful culture and custom by travelling there.

During the Q&A session, participants raised questions regarding Colombia’s logistics and education system.
