2024-07-24

On 24 July, the Maritime Silk Road Society organized the “I. M. Pei: Life Is Architecture” Exhibition guided tour at M+ Museum and the tea gathering at the Art Park. Mr Li Lin, Architect and Tutor of Department of Chinese and History from City University of Hong Kong, conducted the guided tour to introduce several major projects of I.M. Pei and to study his architectural designs thus enabling the participants to appreciate the charm of I.M. Pei's architecture through the passage of time.

The exhibition is divided into six themes, namely ‘Pei’s Cross-Cultural Foundations’, ‘Real Estate and Urban Redevelopment’, ‘Art and Civic Form’, ‘Power, Politics, and Patronage’, ‘Material and Structural Innovation’, and ‘Reinterpreting History through Design’ with an aim to introduce to the public the close connection between I.M. Pei's architecture and human social and cultural life.

Mr Li briefly outlined I.M. Pei's design concepts, the reasons for the design, and the various considerations during the design process. He highlighted a couple of I.M. Pei's design drawings, sketches, architectural models, photographs, and some of his archival records with the participants, which led to an understanding of how I.M. Pei balanced innovation with the environment, the culture and history in designing his works. Mr Li encouraged visitors to take a look of the documentaries and interviews shown at the gallery to gain a deeper understanding of the master of architecture.

After the tour, the participants proceeded to the restaurant, Lau Bak Livehouse of Freespace in the West Kowloon Art Park for a tea gathering and to exchange their views on the exhibition.
