“Hong Kong's Role in International Arbitration - Commercial and Investor-State” Seminar

The 15th Five-Year Plan explicitly proposed accelerating the development of a legal system and capacity for foreign-related matters thus improving mechanisms for international commercial arbitration and litigation. In light of this, the Maritime Silk Road Society was honoured to have invited Barrister Lawrence Ma to host a seminar on “Hong Kong's Role in International Arbitration - Commercial and Investor-State” to discuss Hong Kong's unique advantages, latest developments, and future opportunities as an international legal and dispute resolution services center.
Mr Lawrence Ma, Barrister-at-Law is Council Member of China Law Society; Member of Election Committee of Hong Kong SAR; and Executive Council Chairman of Hong Kong Legal Exchange Foundation. The event was conducted in person and online due to the enthusiastic response.
Mr Ma introduced some basic concepts of investment arbitration, citing several international commercial arbitration cases, including those involving China's five major power generation groups, an aluminium power plant in Inner Mongolia, and a top 30 global commodity supplier. He also listed litigation cases that China has engaged in with Belt and Road countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America over the past 40 years, against the backdrop of China's role as the world's factory and its foreign direct investment, to share the nature, principles and practices of investor state arbitration.
