“The Belt and Road: The Historical Development of Hong Kong Ceramics” seminar organized by Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) was held both onsite and online on 22 October. Mr Yiu Hoi Ki, Director of Wah Tung China Arts Ltd was the speaker.
Mr Yiu started by introducing the kiln firing technique in the 1960s. He used a series of pictures to show the process of antique pottery from molding, burning, painting to weathering. The finished product and the real cultural relics are almost indistinguishable. They are very popular among foreign collectors and are often sold in renowned auction houses.
Mr Yiu also shared the experience of making ceramics. He said that the products may have cracks and black spots after burning due to the poor quality of the raw material clay. The entire batch of pottery had to be remade. From material selection to final processing, every step of making pottery is important.
In the early 1980s, Hong Kong coloured ceramics entered its heyday. Traditional Guangcai patterns were printed on the plain white porcelain body, and then painted by masters with a pen. After that, the porcelain would be polished and smoothed by hand. Finally, an elegant and valuable artwork is crafted.
In addition to antique products, European-style gilt ceramics were also popular in the early 2000s, integrating Chinese and Western cultures. In the past, blue-and-white porcelain production classes were also held in Hong Kong, where participants painted their own porcelains in the hope that it would help to promote ceramic art and inherit precious culture.
