Book Reading Sharing – Support for “Belt and Road”: Chinese manufacturing’s path toward self-strengthening

2022-12-16

The “Book Reading Sharing – Support for ‘Belt and Road’: Chinese manufacturing’s path toward self-strengthening” organized by the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) was held on 16 December. Mr Kwok Yat Ming, Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Federation of Journalists, was the host of the reading sharing; and Mr Alex Wong, CEO of MSRS, shared his thoughts on the book The Industrial Great Power (Chinese Manufacturing’s Path Toward Self-strengthening).

Mr Wong firstly mentioned that the Chinese manufacturing’s path toward self-strengthening was tough. With the Chinese government’s strong and centralized leadership and industrialization motivated by ethnic Chinese capital, it took China only decades to achieve industrialization where it took the West centuries to do the same. Then, he introduced the stories of the 23 core industries – their development, obstacles and path to success. He concluded his presentation with two of the quotes from the book – “Chinese has always been well protected by its bravest people” and “In this complicated and unstable world, a prosperous homeland always gives us courage and hope”. He added that the book is highly thought-provoking and worth-reading and encouraged participants to read it.

During the discussion session, the two speakers each shared the story mentioned in the book that they were most impressed and proud of. Participants also actively raised questions regarding the “silicon shield” of TSMC, China’s diplomatic expansion, China’s medical sciences research, etc. Mr Kwok explained that the rapid development of China in the post economic reform era consisted of three phases: the first phase was characterized by demographic dividend, exchanging labour for capital and preliminary techniques; the second phase followed China’s accession to WTO in 2001, exchanging the market for techniques; the third phase was independent research and development. Mr Wong added that in order to fulfill independent research and development, it was necessary to: (1) refine and improve existing technology; (2) develop technical breakthrough and new technology; and (3) cultivate talents. He ended the reading sharing with the story of “Varyag” aircraft carrier, which symbolized how China had overcome all sorts of difficulties and hardship to obtain her achievements today.

For those who had missed the sharing, MSRS has a few copies of the book available for sale to interested members on a first-come-first-served basis. Kindly contact our office if you would like to obtain a copy of the book.
