Local Tour Series: Turkish Cultural Exchange & Exploration

2023-01-14

Organized by Barefoot Project and Travel Theory and co-organized by the Maritime Silk Road Society, the “Local Tour Series: Turkish Cultural Exchange & Exploration” was held on 14 January. Ms Susanna Cheung, veteran journalist, was the host of the tour.

The first stop of the tour was the Turkish cultural seminar held at Mosaic Art Studio in Kwun Tong. Participants enjoyed authentic Turkish snacks and tea while listening to Ms Cheung’s presentation on the historical background, culture and customs of Türkiye. She also explained the relationship between Türkiye and the “Belt and Road” and shared her travelling experience during the rise of ISIS. Then, a Turkish instructor demonstrated how to brew Turkish coffee on the hot sand. Participants also enjoyed the coffee and musical performance with traditional Turkish instrument, saz.

In the afternoon, the tour proceeded to the Turkuaz Restaurant in Sai Ying Pun for an authentic Turkish lunch.

After lunch, the tour went to the Jamia Mosque. Built in 1849, the Jamia Mosque is the first mosque in Hong Kong. It is famous for its mint exterior. In March 2022, the Mosque was declared a monument. It has also been classified as Grade I historical building while the nearby three-storey residential building has been classified as Grade II historical building. The tour was welcomed by Iman Amin Ma who explained the Islamic history and dogmas, as well as their rationale. He hoped the public gain knowledge about Islam in order to alleviate the stereotypes and bias of the religion.

The tour dismissed at the Hong Kong Park as a fitting finale of the event.
