Dr Huang Ping Spoke on Sino-US Power Play and Hong Kong Economy
2025-04-10
Dr Huang Ping, President of the Chinese Institute of Hong Kong of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, was invited to be the guest speaker at the seminar on “Sino-US Power Play and Future of Hong Kong Economy from the Perspective of Global Changes” co-organized by New Era Xue Xi Association and Maritime Silk Road Society, and supported by Hong Kong Art. The seminar took place on 10 April at Hong Kong Art Space.
Dr Huang pointed out that for nearly half a century, the Western world has been led by the United States, while the non-Western world has been dominated in Asia by China. The US has been monopolizing the market by means of high-tech development, financial capital and US dollar hegemony. Although the US has been relying on the importation of consumer goods produced in China to make profits for nearly 40 years, its traditional industries gradually disappeared.
Dr Huang briefly compared US and Chinese developments in areas such as information technology, aerospace and maritime, military and satellite technology. He concluded that China is catching up in a number of technological areas. In the face of the tariff war between the US and China, which is escalating and intensifying as US President Donald Trump tries to ease the huge deficit by increasing trade tariffs soon after he started his second term, how should Hong Kong respond to maintain its original advantages?
Dr Huang said that from 1949 to 1979, Hong Kong was able to maintain its position as the world’s third largest financial centre despite the economic impact of the Cold War and the Vietnam War. From 1979 to 2019, with the reform and opening up of the Mainland, China's products were mainly exported through Hong Kong, and foreign countries also made use of Hong Kong to gain access to the Mainland market, thus consolidating Hong Kong's position as a re-export trade centre. Moreover, the "Outline of the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan" affirms Hong Kong's role and important functions in the overall development of the nation, and supports Hong Kong in consolidating and enhancing its competitive edge and better integration into the overall development of the country. He believed that if Hong Kong can maintain its high level of development with enhanced technological innovation, it can reinforce its role as a window to China.
Mr Jacky Kwan, Chairman of the New Era Xue Xi Association delivered his welcoming remarks at the beginning of the seminar. Mr Alex Wong, CEO of Maritime Silk Road Society concluded the event with a closing address.
