During my internship at Euroterra Capital in Athens, Greece, I had the opportunity to gain valuable experience and develop skills that will benefit me in my future career. Over the course of my internship, I faced challenges, learned about different cultures, and grew both professionally and personally.
One of the key responsibilities of my role was translating between Chinese and English. I quickly realized that translating accurately is not as simple as converting words from one language to another. It involves understanding the context, nuances, and professional terms used in legal or governmental documents. For instance, when I had to communicate with lawyers or government representatives, I needed to carefully research the relevant policies to ensure my translations were accurate and reliable. This required a high level of attention to detail and self-learning, which taught me the importance of preparation and thoroughness in professional communication.
Another important aspect of my internship was handling clients. Translating messages was only part of the job; I also needed to cater to the clients’ needs and emotions. By showing respect and making them feel welcome, I was able to build positive relationships. This skill was especially important when I exchanged ideas with investors from Mainland China. Through these interactions, I gained a better understanding of their perspectives and the business environment in Mainland China.
I also had the opportunity to meet Greek individuals who spoke Chinese. Some of them had studied in China and were familiar with its economy, which attracts talent from all over the world. These conversations gave me a sense of pride in my cultural heritage and highlighted the global influence of China. Additionally, while chatting with local Europeans, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that many of them were familiar with Hong Kong and held it in high regard for its strong international reputation.
Beyond work, I experienced the cultural differences between Europe and Hong Kong. I enjoyed exploring the local lifestyle, sampling European cuisine, and discovering how food traditions differ from those in Asia. The quality of food in Athens was exceptional, and I appreciated the diversity of flavors I encountered. I also cherished the time spent with my Hong Kong colleagues, who introduced me to hidden gems in downtown Athens, including local restaurants favored by the Hong Kong community.
In conclusion, my internship at Euroterra Capital provided me with invaluable experiences. I honed my translation and communication skills, deepened my cultural understanding, and developed a greater appreciation for the interconnectedness of people from different backgrounds. This journey has been both enriching and inspiring, and I am excited to apply what I have learned to future opportunities.
