This summer, I interned at Euroterra Capital, a real estate company’s branch in Athens, Greece. Coming from Hong Kong, the experience was both exciting and intimidating at first. I found myself in a completely new environment, working as a marketing assistant and translator. My job was to translate during meetings and at the immigration office, I was also the bridge between the Greek staff and our Chinese clients, making sure both sides understood each other and felt heard.
Every day brought different challenges. Sometimes, I was filming and editing video footage of our properties and neighborhoods, trying to showcase Athens through the lens of potential homebuyers. Other times, I would be solving problems for our clients, helping them navigate unfamiliar paperwork or local customs. I quickly realized that communication was about much more than just language—it meant adapting messages, understanding cultural differences, and remaining patient even when things did not go as planned.
There was a particularly challenging moment that involved a client who was palpably impatient and demanding, which clashed with the company’s more relaxed work culture. At first, it was overwhelming to be caught between my easygoing colleagues and a client who expected immediate results. However, by staying calm and listening closely to both sides, I managed to help them agree on clearer deadlines and expectations. This experience tested my mediation skills and taught me how important it is to keep everyone focused on solutions instead of frustrations.
Looking back, I am most proud of the relationships I built—both with clients and coworkers. There were plenty of small moments, like completing a complicated translation and appreciated by the clients and my colleagues or creating a video which received positive feedback, that gave me sense of accomplishment. More than anything, the internship solidified my dream of working in public relations and reinforced my passion in developing cross-cultural communication skills, and I left with greater confidence in my communication skills and my ability to work with people from all walks of life. The eight weeks I spent at Euroterra Capital weren’t always easy, but they were a genuine adventure, and I’ll carry those lessons with me as I move forward in my studies and future career.
