“Hey mom, dad. I am working in Europe this summer.”
“Oh, good for you! Where in Europe?”
“Athens, Greece.”
“Greece? It sounds great! When will your internship start?”
“2 days later.”
My parents were shocked, me either. I flew to Greece just two days after receiving the flight information provided by the company. This is my first σιγά σιγά (slow, chill) experience encountered from the Greek culture. I landed straight into a new country, a new role, and a completely new chapter of my life.
I started my summer as a translator for Euroterra Capital, an international real estate company. My job duties were accompanying clients for property inspection, providing instant verbal translation, preparing reports and photo shooting. Even though the work environment was σιγά σιγά, it was still a new challenge for me to work in a multilingual environment. This role provided invaluable hands-on overseas working experience in a foreign country and deepened my understanding of cross-cultural client management.
I basically worked both indoor and outdoor, with both Greek colleague and Chinese clients. During the inspection trips, I provided real-time verbal translation, bridging the communication gap between clients, Greek lawyers and project developers. Admittedly, it took some time to get used to the instant change of languages, as well as the Greek ancient. Additionally, not everyone I ran into could speak in English. Thus, to understand better and to respect the country I stayed, I learnt Greek intensively, and now I am still saying ναι (yes) in daily life after back to home!
I got extra respect from the locals when I spoke in their language. Indeed, Greek people were extremely friendly and helpful. Still, I encountered difficulties on making friends. There were moments of loneliness in my short stay in Greece, while I was thousands of miles from home, navigating a foreign language and unfamiliar culture. Rather than letting it overwhelm me, I chose to embrace it. I learned to enjoy my own company, to explore the city solo, and to find peace in the chill city. Gradually, I made friends with fellow travelers and locals. I was invited to explore the hidden gems of Greece beyond Athens: the breathtaking sunset in Edem beach, the crystal-clear waters in Aegina and the historical town in Nafplio.
I have gained great experience in my workplace from this internship, as well as the amazing impression of this beautiful Mediterranean country. Greek food and nice weather quickly became the remedy of my days. Imagine to enjoy delicious grilled meat and seafood under the mild sun beside the sea, this is a bonus of my internship and the best memory in my life. I came to Greece for work, but I leave with so much more than expected: professional resilience, lifelong memories, and a deeper sense of myself.
Greece did not just give me a job. It gave me a story that I am proud to tell my family, my friends, and whoever craving for an overseas work opportunity.
