For Greeks, spending time in a coffee shop, having fun with friends and family are their greatest pleasures. This was my second trip to Greece and I tried to live like a native there. I experienced simple happiness in Greece.
The Greeks value relationships with others and they are very hospitable to foreigners. During my internship there, it was easy for colleagues to get along with each other. The Greeks love to invite friends to their homes, and the neighbours like helping each other. In mid-June, I met a new group of local friends at The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It was actually their exam period, but they still invited me to their homes. I was even invited to a family gathering, where a dozen guests were sitting in the hall, singing and dancing along with Greek folk music.
There was a time I wanted to eat Greek souvlaki. The Greek family members drove straight to the supermarket under hot weather. They bought a kilo of pork and chicken and grilled the meat in the garden. I was surprised and very grateful that the Greek family members made my wishes come true. We talked about Chinese and Western cuisine and cultural values while we were having lunch. We all had fun. After that, I cooked the Chinese steamed eggs by myself. Although it was not a high-class dish, what I enjoyed the most was the joyful atmosphere of being together. Perhaps it is Greek happiness.
