2022-08-31

Mr Han Zheng, Vice-premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Mr Han Zheng, gave a keynote speech at the 7th Belt and Road (B&R) Summit jointly organized by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today (31 August).

Vice-premier Han said that Hong Kong is an active participant, contributor, and beneficiary of the "Belt and Road" Initiative (BRI). The Central Government will adhere to the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, and fully support Hong Kong to maintain its unique status and advantages in the long run, and to actively participate in and contribute to the development of the B&R. He expressed four hopes for Hong Kong's participation in the BRI: "Hoping Hong Kong will continue to proactively push forward the country’s development through pragmatic cooperation", "Hoping Hong Kong will strengthen its advantages in professional services and build an integrated service platform for the BRI", "Hoping Hong Kong will strengthen personnel exchanges and promote people-to-people bondage along the B&R”, and "Hoping Hong Kong will deepen its cooperation with the Mainland and integrate more proactively into the overall development of the country".

Next year marks the 10th anniversary of' the BRI proposed by President Xi Jinping. Established in September 2015, the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) is one of the first non-government organizations established in Hong Kong to promote stronger ties between Hong Kong and the regions along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road with an aim to promote the people-to-people bond.

Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of MSRS, thanked Vice-premier Han for his "three pillars of support" to Hong Kong. With the distinct advantage of being backed by the motherland and connecting the world, Hong Kong is an important node in the development of the B&R. MSRS fully agrees that Hong Kong should actively participate in and benefit from the BRI. MSRS will continue striving to deepen the public understanding of the BRI, to encourage the active participation of young people, to strengthen cooperation, and to promote interconnection and interoperability with the B&R countries.
